11 November 2009 - Australian Food News

Black lipped abalone and farmed Southern Bluefin Tuna from ‘Australia’s Seafood Frontier’, the Eyre Peninsula were the major winners at the recent Premier’s Food Awards in South Australia.

Dover Fisheries and Clean Seas Limited were dual winners scooping two awards each, highlighting that seafood from South Australian waters is world class.

“Abalone business Dover Fisheries, which won both the NAB Agribusiness Export Award as well as the new Food Adelaide Value Chain Award, are driving dollars into this State through well researched consumer and market understanding,” Premier Mike Rann said. “Differentiating their products specifically to these needs has allowed them to compete in highly competitive markets and come out on top with consumers.”

The Angelakis family are synonymous with seafood in South Australia. Managing Director, Michael Angelakis, shares his experience of leading a third generation family business.

From inception up until the setting up process, how did you start your business?

The fish industry has always been in our blood. My family comes from Simi and trading and the sea was integral to our way of life.

After my grandfather Michael migrated to Australia I suppose there was a natural progression to the Greek fishing community of Thevenard on the Eyre Peninsula.

Lonely Planet Review

10 Nov 2008: Lonely Planet

Adelaide's main market, near Victoria Sq, is good value for all types of food. For fresh meat, including seafood and gourmet poultry, try Angelakis Bros. Tacked on the market's western end is Chinatown, with a collection of cafés doing fast and furious trade (especially Friday night) and bursting with contented diners slurping soup and noodles.
